Golf Club incident clear case of racial discrimination: Rijiju
NEW DELHI, Jun 27: Union minister Kiren Rijiju today described as a "clear case of racial discrimination" an incident at The Delhi Golf Club, when its staffers asked a woman from Meghalaya to leave a dining room because her traditional Khasi attire looked like a "maid's uniform".
He asked Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik to take appropriate action on the June 25 incident, which, he said, also reflected an "elitist mindset".
Rijiju raised the matter with Patnaik after Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma discussed the issue with the minister.
"I will also speak to the urban development ministry on how such privileges can be given to people with such mindsets," he said about the club, which occupies prime land in the heart of the national capital.
An incensed Rijiju told reporters no one had the right to judge a person by his or her attire.
"It was a clear case of racial discrimination. Such an elitist mindset of some people will destroy the social fabric of the country," he said.
The minister of state for home, who is from Arunachal Pradesh, said the incident was "unfortunate and condemnable".
"Action should be taken. Merely issuing a statement is not enough," he said.
The Meghalaya woman, Tailin Lyngdoh, was asked to leave the room because the club's staffers believed her traditional outfit looked like a "maid's uniform", her employer, Nivedita Barthakur Sondhi, told PTI.
The club issued a statement today, saying it had apologised to the club member who had invited Sondhi and her son's governess, Lyngdoh, to lunch. It also said the incident was being given a "political and cultural overtone".
Rijiju said Indians often faced discrimination abroad over the colour of their skin.
"Many of us create a hue and cry over such incidents," he said.
The Delhi Golf Club incident, he added, was also a case of racial discrimination.
"It reflected how we treat our own people in our own country," he said.
The club must accept it was wrong and act accordingly, he said, adding that there was "no point" issuing a statement.
In its statement, the Delhi Golf Club said the member who had hosted the lunch had "unconditionally" accepted its apology.
"It is unfortunate and regrettable that an undesirable attempt is being made to give the incident a political and cultural overtone," the club said.
It said the club management immediately investigated the incident.
"It has emerged that the incident could have been handled in a much better way by the staff members," it said.
"It was also confirmed that the guests were not asked to leave the club premises," the statement said.
Sondhi said Lyngdoh, who was wearing a jainsem, a traditional Khasi outfit, was asked to leave by two staffers "who told her she looked like a maid and was not allowed there".
Sondhi added that neither she nor Lyngdoh had been contacted by the club or received an apology from it.
In a Facebook post, she had earlier said, "Lyngdoh, an extremely proud, Khasi lady who has travelled the world in her jainsem from London to UAE, was thrown out of The Delhi Golf Club because her dress was taken for a maid's uniform." (PTI)
Governor urges Puroiks to change their dependency mindset
ITANAGAR, Jun 27: Governor P B Acharya urged members of the Puroik community to change their dependency mindset and move forward without looking back at the past to build the community.
Inaugurating the office of the Autonomous Puroik Welfare Board in the Civil Secretariat on Monday, the Governor said the fruits of development must reach to all the sections of the society in equal and appropriate manner.
He exhorted the members of the community to be proud of their identity and keep their culture alive. The Governor also advised the community to go for skill education and entrepreneurship.
Speaker of State Legislative Assembly, T N Thongdok said that the autonomous board would serve as an important platform for all round development of the community. He urged the members of the community to put in concerted effort in establishing permanent model Puroik villages. The speaker also stressed upon the bounden responsibilities of various government departments towards the community.
Home and Education Parliamentary Secretary, Pani Taram also advised Poroiks to avail the maximum benefit from the facility, and urged them to be proactive with the government in order to gainfully address their problems and challenges.
"The Board will take up all challenges of the community with the government and regularly coordinate development activities of the community", said APWB Chairman, Satya Gopal.
It will also take up their reservation in employment and skill development for the community, he said, adding that necessary directives have been issued to the deputy commissioners of Kurung Kumey, Papum Pare, Kra Daadi, East Kameng and West Kameng districts for special drives for enrollment of the members for Jan Dhan Yojana, Aadhaar card, job card, ration card, and PM Awas Yojana etc.

Kampong lamented that this was unfair of the government despite knowing that there are hundreds of qualified teachers available in the state SBM.
Kampong also resented that despite repeated submissions of memorandums to the government, there is no sign of any fruitful action from the government side except hollow assurances.
Further, the SBM employees threatened to launch a series of movements against the government in the form of rallies, protests and indefinite fast from July if the government did not take any concrete steps to solve the issues within stipulated time.

Pema releases PCCF GN Sinha's book on forest offenders
ITANAGAR, Jun 27: Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Tuesday released a book on 'Prosecution of forest offenders in Arunachal Pradesh' written by PCCF, G N Sinha.
The Chief Minister in his remark appreciated Sinha for taking pains to incorporate the amended Act of 2005 of Assam Forest Regulation, 1891 into the parent Act through this book. He has skillfully integrated the amended Act into the body of 1891 Act to address the challenges and controversies arising from the field, he said.
The Chief Minister expressed hope that the book will be of great help in understanding forest law in Arunachal and will be useful guide for forest officials, lawyers and judicial officers to read the Act at a glance and apply them in prosecuting forest offenders.
"This is of utmost importance as mere presence of good law is not enough. Their translation on ground depends on the ability of forest officials to understand the law and skill in the procedure of prosecution," said the Chief Minister.
He expressed happiness that the forest officials in the state are now armed with appropriate legal powers to deal with forest offenders and prosecute them by facilitating speedy trial under the new provisions.
He suggested the Forest Department to organise regular training for field officers on the current forest law in force in the state.
Sinha in his remark said the amendment of the 1891 Act was long overdue for Arunachal, which has been done following directions from the Supreme Court in 1998. The book presents a deep understanding of the forest management from multiple perspectives to deal with realities and challenges when implementing forest laws in the state, he added.

Org demands speedy investigation into Papung Nayu's death

In separate representations to the Home Commissioner, DGP and SP Capital, the organisation, while condemning the incident in strongest terms, asked the officials to take strong action against the arrested culprits besides those evading arrest, saying that 'justice delayed is justice denied'.
The PGSO also threatened to launch rigorous democratic movement if the police failed to arrest the absconding accused and award exemplary punishment at the earliest.
The PGSO in the representations pointed out that on the day of the incident, the deceased along with several other persons were present in the Poongnest Bar till 4 AM in the morning and reached the hotel at around 5.15 AM where he had taken a room.
The organisation said that Papung went to his room 311, where Toki was staying with him. The two persons from Nagaland and Manipur were staying in the adjacent 310 room of the hotel.
"The windows of both the rooms were found opened during the incident which raises doubt that the two persons were involved in the gruesome murder," the representation alleged.
The PGSO further alleged that "the body of Papung was found at around 7.30 AM on the first floor of the hotel and police reached the spot at 8.30 AM despite the fact that the hotel is just one kilometre away from the police station."
"As per statement of the hotel manager, accused Toki Taloh was in the same room with Papung. Why did he not inform the police if the incident was a suicide case? Why did the police not arrest the other two?" the PGSO questioned.
The All Nyishi Students' Union has also strongly condemned the alleged murder of Papung and demanded free and fair investigation into the case.
In a release on Tuesday, the union expressed deep concern over the increase in crime rate in the state and questioned the Home Department's role in curbing the same.
It further urged the district administration to enforce strict rules to streamline the timings of various restaurants and bars in the Capital Complex.

China accuses Indian troops of 'crossing boundary' in Sikkim section
BEIJING, Jun 27: China today accused Indian troops of "crossing the boundary" in the Sikkim section and demanded their immediate withdrawal, while asserting that it has shut down the Nathu La pass entry for Indian pilgrims travelling to Kailash Mansarovar because of the border standoff.
China also said that it has lodged diplomatic protests with India, both in New Delhi and Beijing, alleging that the Indian troops trespassed into Chinese territory in the Sikkim sector.
"We have lodged solemn representations in Beijing and New Delhi to elaborate on our solemn position," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Lu Kang told a media briefing here.
"Our position to uphold our territorial sovereignty is unwavering. We hope the Indian side can work with China in the same direction and immediately withdraw the personnel who have overstepped and trespassed into Chinese border," he said.
China, last night, said that it had put off the visit of Indian pilgrims who enter Tibet via the Nathu La pass "for safety reasons" in view of the border issue.
"China urges India to immediately withdraw its border guards that have crossed the boundary and have a thorough investigation of this matter," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said.

Chinese defence ministry spokesman Ren Guoqiang said yesterday that recently China has begun the construction of a road in Donglang region, but was stopped by Indian troops crossing the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Commissioner reviews educational scenario
BOMDILA, Jun 27: Commissioner Education, Hage Kojeen reviewed various developmental activities being undertaken in the district with special reference to the educational sector on Tuesday evening at Bomdila.
He emphasized the need to restore congenial educational environment of schools and colleges so that the quality of education could be upheld and promoted, and academic performance level especially in CBSE exams could be improved.

Rally to mark International Day against Drug Abuse and Trafficking
AALO, Jun 27: Hundreds of women, including members of Mothers' Vision, Galo Ane Safai Abhiyan, APWWS West Siang unit, besides women from nearby villages took out a rally in Aalo Township to mark International Day against Drug Abuse and Trafficking on Monday last.
Later, addressing the gathering at Old Market Dere, West Siang Deputy Commissioner, Gamli Padu said that drug abuse and trafficking taking place in many parts of the state are detrimental for the younger generation, and sought everyone's support to check it.

Month long badminton coaching camp
BHALUKPONG, Jun 27: A month long free summer badminton coaching camp was launched at Bhalukpong on Tuesday.
Appreciating Bhalukpong Badminton Club President and ASBA executive member, engineer Aju Kunjuju for his tireless efforts in conducting the tournament, Sports Authority of Arunachal Chairman, Bamang Tago said that such initiatives would pave the way to channelize the youth energy in the right direction.
Tago also called on parents and guardians to view sports as a career option for their wards.
Upper Bhalukpong ASM Shrijevev Yame provided 10 boxes of shuttle cock for the coaching camp.
EAC Tomo Riba assured the club of all possible help from the district administration for such events in the future.
The free coaching camp is being organized by the Bhalukpong Badminton Club, with the theme "Catch them Young", in collaboration with the Arunachal State Badminton Association.
In all, 37 girls and 25 boys between the ages of 6 to 15 years are participating in the camp, which will be supervised by professional badminton coaches Gita Karki and Pema Lodhen. The modalities for the coaching have been designed in accordance with latest BWF and BAI standards to suit young children.

Increase upper age limit for job opportunities
Dear Editor,
Since the state government has increased the retirement age from 58 to 60 years, it will have wide implications. Our state is suffering from massive unemployment because of few advertisements of job vacancies that too after long gaps and at uncertain periods. Most of the vacancies are filled through back door appointments, upsetting the deserving minds. The upper age limit for government jobs is 35 years after relaxation for APSTs. Since the job vacancies are few and notifications for the same are very uncertain and often takes a long time, the upper age limit needs to be increased to at least 40 years or more at par with most of the states of the Indian union. Increase in retirement age without increasing upper age limit will be a great injustice to the students’ community. I appeal every student, student's organizations, civil society to fight for this cause because sooner or later this is going to have great social implications.
I appeal our honourable CM and his cabinet colleagues to think seriously over this matter and consider the case for the benefit of the large number of student community.

The deceased was on his way back to his friend's place located at Abotani colony accompanied by one of his cousin and a female friend when a Maruti alto, silver coloured (old model) overtook them and attacked all three members present in the deceased car without daos and sticks.
The attackers were two in numbers who also inflicted serious injuries to the cousin.
On the fateful night, the victims were moving back to home after attending a DJ program at the Green Street Bar located at Niti Vihar, Itanagar.
Two weeks passed by since the incident but the police are yet to give any significant development in the case which has demolished the parents and the family members of the deceased.
I pray everyone to help and co-
I am also content that the law enforcing agency is doing their job decently and serving their best but the murderers are still roaming free.
I, being the father of the deceased do appeal to the law enforcing agency to speed up the investigation process and let justice prevail.
I also appeal all the individuals, communities, NGOs, pressure groups, administration, and every other elite groups to put forth their helping hand in whichever capacity one could in nabbing the culprits.
I firmly believe the culprits will be nabbed and punished accordingly. Because no one deserve to lose a child like I lost mine.
